Ethanol not worst thing train could have been carrying when derailed

While Rockford, Illinois’s train derailment on Friday was indeed tragic, could have been a lot worse, ethanol safety experts said today in an interview with the Rockford Register Star.

“It’s probably the least of a lot of evils we could have from a train derailment,” said David White, founder of firefighter education group Industrial Fire World. “If you’d had acid on the train, it would have been much worse. If it had been chlorine, it would have been much worse. Ethanol’s not nearly the worst thing that could have been on that train.”

Ethanol burns relatively cleanly compared with other liquids, such as chlorine or even diesel fuel, he said. In most circumstances, the best thing to do in an event like Friday’s derailment and fire is let the ethanol burn itself out.

So it seems that ethanol’s environmentally friendlier, cleaner burning reputation can be beneficial in more ways than one.

While accidents and fires of any kind can and do occur and can’t be avoided, safe handling of all flammable substances must be a top priority for those that come in contact with such material.

The Renewable Fuels Association has a great resource on their website for safety information, including training manuals for first responders, and instructional videos. Another great resource is the Ethanol Emergency Response Coalition (EERC) website.

The ethanol industry is deeply invested in the safe transport and delivery of their product, that’s for sure. Safety measures are taken at every opportunity.

And while the precise dynamics of the crash remain under investigation, the tanker cars that transport ethanol and other flammable liquids have safety measures in place specifically to reduce the chance of a leak or ignition, said Tom White, spokesman for the Association of American Railroads, of which Canadian National Railways, which operated the train and owns the tracks involved in Friday’s crash, is a member.

Tragic accidents can’t be prevented, of course, but the likelihood of an accident occurring can be diminished. Be careful out there.

Reverend of Renewables Preaches at FEW

Renewable Fuels Association president and CEO Bob Dinneen once again lived up to his nickname, “Reverend of Renewable Fuels,” preaching another powerful sermon at the 25th annual Fuel Ethanol Workshop in Denver this week.

Dinneen, who has attended 21 of the 25 FEW conferences, exuded his trademark positive outlook and exhorted industry leaders to overcome the challenges they are facing with enthusiasm and energy.

Bob Dinneen“Look at last year – in the face of a deepening economic downturn, negative 3% growth and rising unemployment, the U.S. ethanol industry grew by 34%, 0pening 31 new plants and adding an additional 240,000 new jobs!

We produced more ethanol last year than ever before, some 9 billion gallons, and we added new markets in the southeast and northwest where the RFA had worked with the oil industry and state governments to tear down regulatory barriers to blending.

As our industry grows, we are transforming our nation’s motor fuel market, and we are transforming the rural landscape of America.”

Dinneen addressed the issues of indirect land use changes, higher level blends, food versus fuel, expansion of the market for ethanol, and the need to stay positive.

“We may have troubles, but we in the ethanol industry have a great story to tell, a compelling case to make, new opportunities to seize, and new markets to win over.

Don’t let anybody tell you that the ethanol industry is somehow responsible for despoiling rainforests and increasing carbon. We are the only way gasoline refiners can lower the carbon footprint of their product today.

Don’t let anyone tell you ethanol is a government boondoggle, we are creating new hope, new markets for farm products, new jobs for willing workers and new opportunities for entrepreneurship in communities where people need new pathways to a better life.

Don’t let anybody tell you that the world must choose between food and fuel. Our industry is helping humanity to achieve its historic dream of an affordable, and sustainable, abundance of all the necessities of life.

And don’t let anybody tell you that cellulosic ethanol is somebody’s pipe dream. It is as real as the people in this room.

If we stick together, do our work well, and stay focused on the future, our potential is unlimited – in the near-term, the long-term, and as far as our eyes can see and our minds can imagine.”

Dissent in the Food vs Fuel Ranks

There is reportedly some internal conflict going on within the Grocery Manufacturers Association over the continuing public relations attacks on corn farmers and ethanol.

Rick TolmanIn a recent commentary, National Corn Growers Association CEO Rick Tolman wrote:

“While this struggle plays out we can only hope reason will win the day and the folly of the food vs. fuel fiasco becomes clear. Thus far, the unhappy members of GMA haven’t been able to bring enough pressure to bear to reel in the rogues in the organization.’

Tolman says GMA is now driven by a “philosophy without vision.”

“According to the Kiplinger Ag Letter, “the food vs. fuel protest against ethanol is proving to have little merit,” noting that even though corn use for ethanol rose 40 percent last year, and corn supplies were tighter than expected, the price of corn dropped.’

Despite that, Tolman expects GMA and other food-related ethanol critics, which he calls the Cheap Corn Coalition, “will soon spend more on propaganda to bash the nation’s most important crop than consumers are paying in increased costs at their local market. Not a very constructive investment, unless their ultimate goals is to trounce corn prices back to the stone age and drive family farmers out of business.”

Let’s hope the dissenters in the ranks prevail before that happens.

Sacramento new ethanol “epicenter”?

Some exciting news out of the California capital earlier this week- 25 new E85 pumps have opened in the area in recent weeks, prompting air quality officials to dub Sacramento the “nation’s ethanol epicenter, at least west of the Mississippi.”

“This is a test market for the state,” (Mary) Nichols (California Air Resources Board Chairwoman) said. “We’re in the early stages of the revolution. Consumers will see a lot of new fuels coming onto the market.”

In addition to being cleaner burning and better for the environment, ethanol is cheaper (by more than 60 cents per gallon!) than gasoline. Who couldn’t use a price break is today’s economic environment?

Tuesday, at the Valero station on Madison Avenue, high-octane E85 was going for $2.26 a gallon, while regular unleaded gas was $2.92, unleaded plus $3.04, and super unleaded $3.14.

Expanding renewable fuel outside of the traditional “corn belt” is key in developing the industry even further than it’s come today. That a city in California is leading this movement is certainly encouraging. Congratulations Sacramento!

If you’d like to know more about E85, where to find E85 in your area, or how to tell if you car is an FFV (flexible fuel vehicle), visit the Renewable Fuels Association’s comprehensive website here.

Sec. of Ag writes op-ed for The Hill

Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture over at USDA, wrote an op-ed for The Hill on Monday. Vilsack discusses rural America’s important role in energy independence, how it relates to national security and the state of the country today, and initiatives the Obama administration is taking to help the growth of rural areas:

President Obama and I share a common vision that our nation’s farmers, ranchers, forest owners and rural communities should lead the way in creating a new-energy economy and producing more of our nation’s power through renewable sources. Right now we have the unique opportunity to spur economic development, improve our environment, and create jobs domestically by replacing our dependence on fossil fuels with energy-efficient biofuels.

Vilsack touches on the newly-formed Biofuels Interagency Working Group, highlighting their hopes to “develop policies to increase flexible-fuel vehicle use and assist in retail marketing efforts while taking a broad view of how to strengthen rural communities.”

The economic challenges facing the nation are also a point of discussion:

It goes without saying that these are difficult times for the biofuels industry: Oil prices are well below their 2008 peak, input costs have soared unpredictably and the economic downturn has decreased consumption. However, it is critical that we maintain the renewable fuel capacity that we have already built as we support the transition to second- and third-generation biofuels.

It’s refreshing to see that clean energy (in particular, biofuels) are near the top of the Obama administration’s priorities. There are only so many ways to displace some of the imports of finite sources of petroleum, and ethanol is available NOW. Definitely worth a read.
